Words in the Workplace

General No Comments

There are people who do have a “way with words.” They speak in prose, and they use clear words that everyone understands. Yet even those who have the talent can be defeated when they inject “no,” “but” or “however” into their statements.

Whether at home or at work, those who use them can sabotage themselves. Consider these:

“I think it’s fine, but … .” (Never attach a complaint to a positive statement).

“No, that idea won’t work,” Instead, give constructive ideas on what would work.

The third self-defeating word is “however,” as in “That certainly has merit, however … .” This is a thinly veiled attempt to prove someone wrong.

Some people feel a need to be right all the time. No one is.

So watch these three little words, and get more positive results.

Becoming emotionally engaged on the job

General No Comments

Worldwide, a study of workers in 19 countries shows that only 21 percent of workers are “engaged” in their work. The study by Towers Perrin, a consulting firm, indicates that workers in the U.S. rank fourth in levels of emotional connection with their company at 29 percent. The leaders were Mexico with 54 percent, Brazil with 37 percent, and India at 36 percent.

In addition to that 29 percent in the U.S., another 43 percent were classed as “enrolled” or on their way to becoming engaged in their work.

While focusing on customers was a key driver of engagement, being aware of what they need to do to add value and being willing to do it were big factors in job satisfaction.

Salary was actually less of a factors than was the feeling that the company was interested in their well-being.

Other factors affecting emotional engagement  included:

  • the opportunity to improve skills
  • career advancement opportunities
  • having challenging work assignments
  • having input into department decisions

A good relationship with the boss was important, as was working for an organization that solved customer problems and was socially responsible.

So if you feel disaffected with your current position, perhaps it’s time to start thinking more seriously about starting up your own online business. It will certainly lead to a lot of advancement, challenges, and decisions!

Mac’s Leopard better than Microsoft Vista

Mossberg likes Leopard better than Vista Apple has released a new version of its OS X operating system. Called Leopard, it replaces the previous version known as Tiger.

The Wall Street Journal’s tech expert Walter Mossberg says it builds on Apple’s quality advantage over Windows. In his view, Leopard is better and faster than Vista and has new features that make Macs even easier to use.

Among them are Time Machine, which automatically backs up the entire computer in the background. Cover Flow and Quick Look allow rapid viewing of the contents of files without opening any programs, and its Boot Camp program for running Windows on Mac are built into the new OS X system and work very well.

The Leopard upgrade costs $129 and works on Macs up to six years old.
